Wood and Gibson

Wood and Gibson was a photographic partnership active specifically in 1862, specializing in documentary images of the American Civil War theater in Virginia. Their known output focuses heavily on military installations and surrounding landmarks in the Yorktown and Pamunkey River regions.

Five photographs by Wood and Gibson are currently represented in museum collections, confirming the historical significance and professional standard of their documentary work. These images are held in the permanent collection of the Art Institute of Chicago. The preservation of such early photography ensures the historical integrity and museum-quality of the original prints.

Their surviving titles document strategic and logistical subjects of the military campaign. Key works include the detailed studies Battery No. 1, Near Yorktown, Virginia and Battery No. 4, Near Yorktown, Virginia. Other notable documentation includes Inspection of Troops at Cumberland Landing, Pamunkey, Virginia and the landscape image Moore House, Yorktown, Virginia. Given the age of their work, many of these photographs are now in the public domain, allowing institutions to provide access to high-quality prints for researchers and the general public.
