Wolf and Palisa

The collaborative entity known as Wolf and Palisa was active in the realm of scientific photography during a concentrated period in the early 20th century, with documented work spanning 1901 through 1906. Their output consisted entirely of specialized photographic documents utilized for astronomical mapping and research.

The known body of work is unified by the consistent title Photographische Sternkarten (Photographic Star Charts). Five examples of this documentation are currently represented in major American collections, establishing the collaborators’ role in the history of early celestial documentation. The National Gallery of Art holds several of these significant records, dating from April 24, 1901, to March 17, 1906.

As these historic scientific photographs fall into the public domain due to their age, they are frequently made accessible as downloadable artwork, ensuring their continued use for educational and research purposes. Institutions maintain high-quality prints of these precise and detailed early records.
