Willem van Senus

Willem van Senus was a graphic artist active from 1783 to 1824. His documented output focuses exclusively on printmaking, spanning the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Nine of his prints are currently represented in major museum collections, establishing his presence in the graphic arts of the period. His works are notably held by the Rijksmuseum.

Van Senus primarily specialized in portraiture, demonstrating proficiency in commissioned likenesses. Key examples include the named portraits Portret van Hermanus van Hasselt, Portret van Jan Frederik van Beeck Calkoen, and Portret van Jan van Walré. His portfolio also includes genre studies such as Portret van een onbekende man met medaille, indicating a focus on notable or professional subjects.

Beyond commissioned work, Van Senus addressed classical and historical narratives, evidenced by the print Dido op de brandstapel. As the work of Willem van Senus originates from the early 19th century, many of these images are now in the public domain, often available through institutions providing downloadable artwork and high-quality prints for scholarship and study.
