Willem Geets

Willem Geets was an artist active during the late nineteenth century, with documented production spanning the period between 1874 and 1897. His known output consists primarily of prints, suggesting a specialization in printmaking techniques during this era. While historical details of his life remain sparse, the subject matter of his surviving works indicates a focus on both narrative drama and genre scenes.

The represented works by Geets reflect a capacity for depicting emotionally charged subjects, exemplified by the print Hond naast het lichaam van een overleden soldaat (Dog next to the body of a deceased soldier). He also explored literary or possibly theatrical themes, evidenced by multiple compositions centered on the figures Méphisto and Martha, three of which are documented under the title Méphisto en Martha. Other pieces depict more conventional social scenes, such as Jong koppel loopt arm in arm over een brug (Young couple walks arm in arm over a bridge).

Seven works by Geets are currently represented in public collections, establishing the preservation of his legacy. These museum-quality prints are held in the collection of the Rijksmuseum. Given the age of the works, many Willem Geets prints and other downloadable artwork from his active period are now considered part of the public domain.
