Wilhelmus Johannes Steenhoff
Wilhelmus Johannes Steenhoff was an artist active for at least fifteen years during the late nineteenth century. Documentary evidence places his activity between 1873 and 1888. Though the scope of his total output is not fully known, Steenhoff's surviving works held in museum collections consist entirely of prints, suggesting a focus on graphic media.
Five of his high-quality prints are represented in the collections of the Rijksmuseum, establishing his presence in the history of Dutch graphic arts. Steenhoff’s subject matter appears diverse, encompassing both religious and architectural themes alongside landscape views. His catalog of documented works includes two depictions of the biblical scene Christus na de kruisafneming (Christ After the Descent from the Cross) and two examples of the landscape print Riviergezicht met molen (River View with Windmill). A significant architectural study, Interieur van de kathedraal van Sint-Michiel en Sint-Goedele (Interior of the Cathedral of St. Michael and St. Gudula), is also preserved.
Today, due to the age of his documented activity, Steenhoff’s works are increasingly part of the public domain. This accessibility allows institutions to offer high-quality prints and downloadable artwork derived from his limited surviving body of work.
