Vincent Laurensz. van der Vinne
Vincent Laurensz. van der Vinne was an artist active from approximately 1650 until 1714. His surviving documented output consists primarily of graphic works focused on detailed natural history studies.
Thirteen works attributed to van der Vinne are held in prominent international institutions, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Rijksmuseum. These holdings comprise five drawings and eight prints, establishing his role within the tradition of finely rendered scientific observation. His subject matter focused intensely on entomology and invertebrates, evidenced by works such as A Black Beetle, A Caterpillar, A Slug, and the precise observational study Green Beetle with Brown Legs.
The detailed nature of his subjects places his work within the context of early scientific illustration. Today, surviving examples of Vincent Laurensz. van der Vinne prints remain important references for art history and science. As historical works, many of these detailed illustrations now reside in the public domain, increasing the availability of museum-quality reproductions for collectors and researchers.
