Victor F. Muollo
Victor F. Muollo was an artist active during the mid-1930s, documenting American decorative arts between 1935 and 1937. Muollo is recognized for his significant contributions to the Index of American Designs, a crucial visual archive created under the Works Progress Administration (WPA) Federal Art Project. This government initiative aimed to record and preserve the visual record of historical American folk art and craftsmanship.
Muollo’s work consists of detailed renderings of artifacts, focusing on historical objects reflecting iconic Americana and Shaker traditions. Fifteen of his indexed designs are held in institutional collections. Notable documented studies include the Cigar Store Indian, Flag Pole Finial, Shaker Blanket Box, Shaker Looking Glass and Rack, and Shaker Mirror Rack. These detailed records function as essential documentation of early American material culture.
The comprehensive collection of his Index work is preserved by the National Gallery of Art. Because of their origin within a federal art program, these detailed visual records are frequently in the public domain, allowing for widespread academic study and access. Reproductions of Victor F. Muollo prints are valued for their high-quality documentation of historical objects.
