Tibet Regters
Tibet Regters was active as a painter between 1751 and 1761. Regters specialized in portraiture, working primarily in Amsterdam during the mid-eighteenth century.
The artist's known body of work, as represented in institutional collections, consists exclusively of formal portraits of notable Amsterdam citizens. Five such Tibet Regters paintings are currently held in the Rijksmuseum collection, indicating their role within the city’s civic and commercial elite. These portraits provide a specific historical record of influential figures from the era.
Significant works preserved in the collection include the Portrait of Jan ten Compe, Painter and Art Dealer in Amsterdam, and the Portrait of Jan Wagenaar, City Historian of Amsterdam. Regters also completed a related pair of works, documenting the prominent Rendorp family: the Portrait of Joachim Rendorp, Baron of Marquette, Brewer and Burgomaster of Amsterdam several times, and the companion piece, Portrait of Wilhelmina Hillegonda Schuyt, Wife of Joachim Rendorp. A separate work, the Portrait of Pieter Nicolaas Rendorp, Amsterdam Brewer, further establishes the artist’s connection to the city's powerful brewing and political dynasties.
Tibet Regters's paintings are now frequently accessed as high-quality prints and are widely studied as examples of mid-18th century Dutch portraiture. The fact that the artist's representative works are in the public domain allows for broad access to these historical images, often available as downloadable artwork for scholarly and commercial use.
