Theodor Bang

Theodor Bang was a printmaker active circa 1600. Lacking specific biographical details, the artist is primarily known through a small but important body of ornamental engravings documenting the decorative styles prevalent in the early 17th century.

Nine of Bang's documented compositions are represented in major international museum collections. These works consist almost entirely of intricate pattern designs intended for decorative application. The artist is best known for the series Friezes with Birds, Flowers and Meandering Wreaths and Scrolls, which utilizes detailed repeating scrolls, botanical elements, and avian motifs characteristic of graphic design during the period. The Metropolitan Museum of Art holds several examples from this collection, including plates 1 through 5, establishing the historical significance of Theodor Bang prints.

Today, due to their age, the original engravings are widely considered to be in the public domain. This accessibility allows for the creation of high-quality prints from the artist's preserved output, facilitating both scholarly study and general appreciation of these exemplary early modern designs.
