T. F. Goodall, Peter Henry Emerson
T. F. Goodall and Peter Henry Emerson were a photographic partnership active between 1885 and 1886, specializing in landscape and documentary photography. Their brief but influential period of collaboration centered around the creation and publication of the volume Life and Landscape on the Norfolk Broads (London, 1886). This work provided a detailed visual record of the naturalistic landscape and activities of the Norfolk Broads region.
The artists’ output is documented in major American institutions, establishing the significance of their work in the history of photography. Fourteen photographs and the associated volume are represented in museum collections, including the National Gallery of Art and the Museum of Modern Art.
Notable works held in these collections include Poling the Marsh Hay (from the 1886 volume), 'Twixt Land and Water, A Marsh Farm, A Norfolk Boat-Yard, and A Reed-Cutter at Work. These T. F. Goodall, Peter Henry Emerson prints demonstrate a commitment to naturalistic observation. Today, certain museum-quality images by the partnership are preserved in the public domain, offering access to their late 19th-century photographic documentation.
