Sigismundus Latomus
Sigismundus Latomus was an artist or designer whose documented activity is recorded in 1608. Latomus specialized in the creation of printed design manuals or pattern books, a genre crucial for disseminating decorative motifs for textiles, metalwork, or lace during the early 17th century.
Fifteen complete books attributed to Latomus are represented in institutional holdings, confirming his role as a source for early Baroque-era ornament and design. Among these documented works is the publication titled Schön newes Modelbuch. Specific pages from this volume, including Schön newes Modelbuch (Page 100r) and subsequent folios like Schön newes Modelbuch (Page 103r), are preserved in museum collections, establishing the scope of the artist’s output.
Examples of Sigismundus Latomus prints are held by major institutions, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Because of the age of the original material, many of these influential designs are now in the public domain, allowing contemporary researchers and designers to access high-quality prints derived from his 1608 output.
