Sebastian Dadler
Sebastian Dadler was a highly active metalworker documented between 1625 and 1648. Recognized primarily as a medalist, his surviving body of work reflects the complex political and religious dynamics of mid-17th century Europe.
The artist's output documented in major institutions consists of eight metalworks. These pieces often served a commemorative function, marking significant military and dynastic events. Notable documented works include the religious subjects Christ Showing the Stigmata and Christ and St. Paul, alongside royal commissions such as Gustav Adolf and the medal commemorating Gustavus Adolphus' Victory at Breitenfeld. Dadler also produced the Commemorative medal on the marriage of Wladislaus IV (Władysław IV Vasa), King of Poland and Ludovica (Marie Louise) Gonzaga, Princess of Mantua, showcasing his role within European royal courts.
Dadler's technical skill and historical importance are evidenced by the inclusion of his works in prestigious international collections. Metalworks by the artist are represented in the holdings of the Rijksmuseum and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Examples of Sebastian Dadler prints and medallions are often sought for museum-quality collections today. Many of his historical compositions are now available as downloadable artwork, providing access to these significant historical records.
