Portrait of Sauveur Legros

Sauveur Legros

Sauveur Legros was an artist active during the late 18th century, with his documented career spanning the years 1764 to 1796. His documented output is centered entirely on the medium of printmaking.

Evidence of Legros’s work is preserved today in major institutional holdings. Nine of his prints are known to be represented in museum collections, most notably at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. These surviving Sauveur Legros prints demonstrate an artistic focus encompassing both religious themes and detailed, expansive landscape studies, providing valuable insights into late 18th-century graphic arts.

The documented works include devotional studies, such as Beeld van een vrouwelijke heilige in een nis, alongside naturalistic compositions like Landschap met een cascade en een man met een stok and the structurally focused Landschap met een brug naar een toren. Further works emphasizing his natural sensitivity include Landschap met een koeherder op een brug and Landschap met rotsblok. As many of the artist’s etchings and engravings now fall into the public domain, high-quality prints derived from the original plates are frequently made available to researchers and collectors.
