Rosa Burger

Rosa Burger was an artist active in the United States, documented between 1935 and 1940. Their contributions are associated primarily with the Index of American Design (IAD), a comprehensive project sponsored by the Federal Art Project during the late Depression era. Burger’s role was to create exacting documentary renderings of American folk art and decorative objects, thereby preserving records of material culture.

The output documented in museum collections reflects this focus on functional artifacts. Nine index of american designs attributed to Rosa Burger are held in institutional collections, offering detailed visual records of historical items. Specific works represented include drawings of a Candlestand, documentation of multiple Kitchen Chair designs, and renderings of a Doorstop (Doll).

These artifacts are preserved in the permanent collections of the National Gallery of Art. Because of their federal provenance, many of the original designs and available Rosa Burger prints fall within the public domain, providing researchers access to high-quality prints and downloadable artwork that documents early American craftsmanship.
