Portrait of Robbert Muys

Robbert Muys

Robbert Muys was active as an artist spanning the years 1752 to 1785. His documented artistic output consists primarily of prints, reflecting a career that bridged the late Baroque and early Neoclassical periods of the 18th century.

Eight of his prints are currently represented in institutional collections, most notably at the Rijksmuseum. This body of work establishes his place in the history of graphic illustration through a diverse set of subjects, ranging from specific figure studies to academic depictions. The extant Robbert Muys prints include observational and character compositions such as Portret van een onbekende man and Oude man met een speer, alongside the more complex narrative study De ingebeelde zieke. Another preserved work, Oude man met een boek en een speer, combines literary and figure study elements.

His scope of work also encompassed academic documentation, evidenced by the print Anatomische afbeelding, suggesting involvement in scientific or preparatory illustration. Today, these preserved images, frequently available in the public domain, are often reproduced as high-quality prints, providing ongoing insight into the practice of 18th-century graphic art.
