Polifilo Giancarli

Polifilo Giancarli, also documented under the surname Zancarli, was an active printmaker and designer during the early 17th century. His documented artistic activity spanned the years 1620 to 1628.

Giancarli’s output focuses primarily on highly detailed engravings intended for decorative application and design reference. A total of 15 prints by the artist are represented in museum collections, establishing his influence in providing source material for the period. These detailed works document architectural and ornamental designs.

The most notable series attributed to Giancarli is Disegni Varij di Polifilo Zancarli, which specifically features studies of friezes. Multiple copies of these designs are held in institutional collections, confirming their utility as design templates.

Today, Polifilo Giancarli prints are preserved in major American institutions, most notably the Metropolitan Museum of Art, which maintains a significant holding of his work. Given the age of the engravings, this material resides in the public domain, making high-quality reproductions and downloadable artwork available for scholarly research and study of 17th-century European design.
