Pieter Serwouters

Pieter Serwouters was an artist active during the early 17th century, with his documented production spanning the years 1600 through 1616. Serwouters is known primarily as a printmaker, a specialization reflected in the existing records that include fourteen known Pieter Serwouters prints and one painting represented in institutional collections.

The documented works cover a range of subjects, including portraiture, classical mythology, and complex biblical narratives. Major works held in museum collections include the individualized study Portret van een man, the mythological scene Bacchus op handen gedragen, and the study of human dynamics Allegory of Marital Strife. Religious themes are notably represented by the detailed narrative Scène uit de Apocalyps (Apoc. 20:1-3), alongside other pieces such as Oude man met rol papier.

The continued relevance of Serwouters's output is evidenced by the inclusion of his works in major international collections, specifically the Rijksmuseum and the Art Institute of Chicago. The preservation of these materials as museum-quality works allows for the study of 17th-century printmaking. Many of these historical images, now existing in the public domain, contribute to the accessibility of graphic arts from the period.
