Pieter Barbiers
Pieter Barbiers was an artist active in the graphic arts toward the close of the 18th century and the early 19th century, with his documented creative period spanning 1779 through 1808. His surviving work demonstrates proficiency across drawing and various print media.
A small, verifiable corpus of Barbiers's output is preserved in institutional collections. Currently, eight works are documented in museum holdings, comprising seven prints and one drawing. All known works are housed within the Rijksmuseum collection.
Barbiers engaged in a variety of subjects, including architectural design, figurative study, and detailed animal portraiture. Notable documented pieces include the design study Ontwerp voor een toneeldecor van een kerkinterieur and the figurative street scene Drie vrouwen en kind op stoep. The artist also produced finely observed naturalistic studies, such as the prints Hoofd van paard met teugels, Kop van schaap, and Kop van zwartbont kalf en schaap.
The enduring collection of Pieter Barbiers prints serves as an important record of graphic production during this period. As documented works held in major public institutions, many of these materials are now in the public domain, making high-quality prints and downloadable artwork accessible for academic research and study.
