Philippus Velijn
Philippus Velijn was a graphic artist active from 1797 until 1836, whose output focused on portraiture in the medium of printmaking. Eight of Velijn’s prints are represented in major institutional collections, establishing their contribution to early nineteenth-century documentation and graphic arts.
Velijn’s recorded works consist entirely of portrait prints depicting notable figures, including writers, politicians, and intellectuals. Among the documented subjects are Portret van Fenna Mastenbroek, Portret van Frans Naerebout, and Portret van Christianus Petrus Eliza Robidé van der Aa. The artist also produced historical likenesses such as Portret van Gysbert Japicx and Portret van de dichter Jacob van Maerlant.
The work of Philippus Velijn prints is held in significant institutional collections, notably the Rijksmuseum. Due to their early nineteenth-century origin, many of these documentary portraits reside in the public domain, ensuring continued accessibility for study and reproduction. Researchers and the public can access high-quality prints of Velijn’s works through digital library initiatives.
