Octave Tassaert

Nicolas François Octave Tassaert (1800-1854) was a figure of complex and often contradictory appeal within French painting of the mid-nineteenth century. A highly versatile artist, Tassaert was adept across multiple disciplines, working prolifically as a painter of portraits, historical scenes, and allegory, while maintaining a parallel career as a skilled lithographer and engraver. Born into an artistic dynasty, he was the grandson of the esteemed Flemish sculptor Jean-Pierre-Antoine Tassaert, positioning him firmly within the inherited traditions of European draftsmanship.

Tassaert’s work is characterized by a stark thematic duality that provides enduring interest. On one hand, he stands as an early exponent of social realism, chronicling the miserable existence of the Parisian downtrodden.
