Nicolas Gabriel Dupuis
Nicolas Gabriel Dupuis was an active printmaker spanning the period from 1713 to 1755. Known primarily for his engraved works, Dupuis’s surviving output demonstrates an engagement with religious iconography and historical portraiture.
Five prints attributed to Dupuis are represented in major museum collections, establishing his presence in 18th-century European printmaking. These works include the religious scenes Judith standing and looking up, holding the head of Holofernes in her left hand and a sword in her right, tents in the background, after Reni and two versions of The Guardian Angel, stepping off a cloud and putting his arm around a young boy at left while a demon walks away at right. He also produced allegorical and commemorative works, such as Celebrating Peace (Réjouissances pour la paix), which depicts three putti involved with fireworks, and the portrait print Gaspard Duchange.
The quality and preservation of Dupuis’s output are substantiated by their inclusion in prestigious institutions. His work is held in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the National Gallery of Art. Today, many of these museum-quality historical prints are available to researchers and the public, often as high-quality prints derived from public domain source material. Researchers seeking downloadable artwork frequently encounter Dupuis’s documented prints, confirming his status among documented 18th-century engravers.
