Nicolaes Aartman

Nicolaes Aartman was an artist active during the eighteenth century, documented working between 1723 and 1759. Their known artistic output consists primarily of drawings, demonstrating an interest in detailed genre scenes, landscapes, and maritime subjects typical of the period.

Aartman’s historical significance is established through the permanent collection of the Rijksmuseum, which holds their work. Five drawings attributed to the artist are represented in institutional holdings. These subjects span domestic interiors, such as Interieur met theedrinkend gezelschap, and broader landscape studies like Zomerlandschap met figuren en vee.

Maritime and nautical themes were a specialized area within Aartman's portfolio, evident in titles such as Riviergezicht met schepen, Schepen op een winderige rivier, and the subject drawing Marine. Today, the surviving Nicolaes Aartman prints and drawings are often available as high-quality prints, with high-resolution digital scans frequently entering the public domain as downloadable artwork.
