Portrait of Monogrammist AC

Monogrammist AC

The artist designated Monogrammist AC was a printmaker active for a brief, documented period between 1520 and 1524. Operating during the early sixteenth century, the artist focused primarily on graphic works featuring classical mythology, allegory, and martial scenes, reflecting the popular thematic interests of the Northern Renaissance.

Fifteen of Monogrammist AC’s prints are currently represented in museum collections, confirming the artist’s dedication to this medium. Notable examples of their output include the allegorical print Allegorie van Tijd en Fortuin and the mythological scene Apollo en de Muzen. The artist frequently addressed conflict and military history, producing complex compositions such as Gevecht tussen elf soldaten and the frequently cataloged Gevecht tussen Romeinse soldaten.

These historical and narrative compositions are preserved in major European institutions, most notably the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. Today, the surviving Monogrammist AC prints constitute an important record of early sixteenth-century graphic art. Many of these museum-quality works are now available in the public domain, offering valuable resources for scholars and enthusiasts seeking downloadable artwork from the period.
