Mathieu Coiny fils
Mathieu Coiny fils was a metalworker active during the eighteenth century, with a documented career spanning 1700 to 1771. His known artistic output consists entirely of small, meticulously crafted objects of virtue intended for the elite European market.
Five of his metalworks are represented in collections, notably the Metropolitan Museum of Art. These surviving pieces reflect the demanding technical standards of early eighteenth-century luxury goods. Documented works include three variations of snuffboxes, demonstrating Coiny fils’s expertise in integrating complex surface decoration. Specific examples are the Snuffbox with miniatures representing domestic scenes and still-life subjects and the Snuffbox with domestic scenes.
His preserved accessories also include a Shuttle (navette) and an Étui. The high standard of execution ensures these objects retain their museum-quality status centuries after their creation. As an artist whose career concluded in the 1770s, his historical works are now routinely considered public domain, making high-quality photographic records of his metalwork available as downloadable artwork for scholarly study.
