Maruyama Ōkyo (円山応挙)
Maruyama Ōkyo (円山応挙) was an artist whose active period spanned documentation from 1600 to 1784. Fifteen of the artist’s paintings are currently represented in museum collections, establishing his presence in major American institutions such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Cleveland Museum of Art.
The surviving Maruyama Ōkyo (円山応挙) paintings document a range of subjects, from traditional portraiture and literary themes to detailed nature studies. Noted works include the highly realistic composition Fish in Summer and Autumn and the landscape piece Gassaku: Mount Fuji. Other significant titles held in collections are the portrait Portrait of Botanka Shōhaku, the historical scene Literary Gathering in the Orchid Pavilion, and the extensive series Eight Views of Xiao and Xiang Rivers.
The historical nature of his output means that much of his catalog is considered part of the public domain. This accessibility allows for the creation of high-quality prints and ensures that museum-quality reproductions remain available for study and appreciation.
