Marie Famularo was an artist whose documented professional activity spanned the period of 1935 to 1936. Their output focused primarily on the detailed visual documentation of historical objects, resulting in 15 index of american designs held in museum collections. This body of work situates Famularo within the context of American art initiatives during the Great Depression, likely contributing to the Federal Art Project’s Index of American Design.
The primary goal of this project was to create a comprehensive visual record of American material culture, emphasizing craftsmanship and decorative arts. Famularo's contribution involved studies of period clothing, accessories, and functional household items. Five representative works currently held in the National Gallery of Art collection include the design studies Canister, Portrait Case, Woman's Bonnet, Cameo Brooch, and Child's Hat.
The meticulous nature of these renderings means that today, Marie Famularo prints and design studies provide valuable research material for historians and designers. Due to their historical documentation status, many of these images reside in the public domain, allowing the reproduction of high-quality prints for scholarly use and public appreciation.
