Lillian M. Mosseller

Lillian M. Mosseller was an artist documented during a brief but intensive period of activity between 1935 and 1936. Mosseller's entire verifiable output is dedicated to the documentation of American decorative arts, primarily conducted through the Index of American Design initiative. This project aimed to create a systematic, visual catalog of folk and craft objects from across the United States.

Mosseller is credited with eight index of american designs, which function as high-quality, archival records of historical objects. These documents focus on textiles, with five specific examples identified in museum records as Hooked Rug. These meticulous renderings provide detailed, museum-quality representations of American craftsmanship.

The artworks created by Lillian M. Mosseller are held in the permanent collection of the National Gallery of Art. Due to their status as federally commissioned documents, the works are often available in the public domain. Researchers frequently access these records, including downloadable artwork and Lillian M. Mosseller prints, which serve as essential resources for the study of 20th century material culture.
