Jules Lefevere

Jules Lefevere was active documenting historic American designs between 1935 and 1936. Lefevere’s known output is defined by contributions to the Index of American Designs, a comprehensive survey of early American decorative arts. Fifteen of the recorded works attributed to Lefevere are preserved in institutional collections.

The documented works focus on textile arts and functional domestic items, emphasizing precise cataloging of historical patterns and construction. Notable pieces represented in the database include the Candlewick Coverlet (Woven), an Embroidered Rug, and examples of historic bedding, such as the Patchwork Crib Quilt and the Applique Quilted Coverlet. Documentation also extended to everyday artifacts, exemplified by a carefully indexed Pie Plate.

These important historical records are held in the collection of the National Gallery of Art, establishing their status as museum-quality resources for the study of material culture. The archival nature of this project means that the resulting documentation, often manifesting as Jules Lefevere prints and drawings, frequently enters the public domain, making high-quality prints available for research and study.
