Jonas Silber

Jonas Silber was an artist primarily recognized for his graphic work, active over an eleven-year period documented between 1572 and 1583. His surviving artistic record is highly specialized, consisting predominantly of prints, though a single drawing is also attributed to him.

The subjects of Silber's work often drew from classical mythology and biblical parables. Notable prints represented in institutional collections include Apollo Pursuing Daphne and multiple interpretations of Bacchic narratives, such as Bacchus Riding in a Wagon and two cataloged examples titled Triumphal Procession of Bacchus. Biblical themes are also represented by the print Verloren Zoon als veehoeder (The Prodigal Son as Swineherd).

Approximately ten works attributed to the artist are preserved across major international institutions, establishing the credibility of the Jonas Silber prints as historical objects. These holdings are located in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Rijksmuseum, and the National Gallery of Art. Given the early date of the work, many of these high-quality prints are now widely accessible for research and study, often falling under the public domain.
