John W. Kelleher

John W. Kelleher was a draftsman and documentarian active between 1935 and 1937. His verifiable output is defined by his extensive contributions to the Index of American Design, a federal arts project dedicated to meticulously recording historical American decorative arts and folk objects.

Kelleher’s work focused on documenting diverse artifacts, with fifteen studies known to be held in museum collections. These works, preserved in the National Gallery of Art, include detailed renderings of early American maritime history, such as three studies of figureheads, one specifically titled Figurehead: "Hercules". He also documented functional design objects, including detailed technical studies of Shaker craftsmanship, represented by the Shaker Dining Table (Marble Top) and the Shaker Secretary.

As a contributor to a major public initiative, Kelleher's Index designs are significant primary sources for researchers. The historical importance of these original documents ensures their availability as royalty-free downloadable artwork in the public domain, offering access to high-quality prints documenting American material culture.
