Portrait of John Jones

John Jones

John Jones was a graphic artist documented as active between 1787 and 1792. His concise period of activity in the late eighteenth century is represented by several known prints, demonstrating skill in both portraiture and genre scenes.

Five of Jones’s high-quality prints are currently preserved within major international museum collections, establishing his work's historical importance. His output includes theatrical portraits, such as the depiction of actress Dorothy Jordan, and the dramatic portrayal in Mr. Henderson in the Character of Macbeth. Jones also documented social life through genre scenes, specifically the contrasting works Black Monday, or the Departure for School and Dulce Domum, or the Return from School. Further portraiture is represented by the work Portret van Gertrude Fitzpatrick.

The prints of John Jones are held by leading institutions worldwide, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Rijksmuseum. Due to their age and inclusion in these public holdings, many of these historical works have entered the public domain and are available today as downloadable artwork.
