Portrait of Johannes Glauber

Johannes Glauber

Johannes Glauber was an artist active between 1646 and 1684. His documented body of work focuses almost exclusively on landscape subjects, often depicting pastoral and idealized settings suggestive of the Arcadian tradition. This focus is explicit in titles such as Arcadian Landscape and Arcadisch landschap met twee herders. Other subjects, like Gezicht op de grote waterval van Chartreuse, demonstrate an interest in specific, dramatic topography.

Works by Glauber are held in major international collections, establishing his presence in the history of seventeenth-century landscape art. These institutions, including the Rijksmuseum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the National Gallery of Art, preserve fifteen known works representing the range of his output. These collections document seven Johannes Glauber prints, five drawings, and three paintings.

The continued study and appreciation of the artist’s output are facilitated by the accessibility of his artwork. Since many of these pieces are held in the public domain, high-quality prints and downloadable artwork are available for research and exhibition. Examples of his documented works also include Mountain Landscape with Two Men Resting and Heuvelachtig landschap met herders.
