Portrait of Johann Sebastian Müller

Johann Sebastian Müller

Johann Sebastian Müller was a printmaker and designer documented as active between 1745 and 1767. His surviving works indicate a specialization in both decorative architectural schematics and reproductive printmaking.

Müller's documented output primarily consists of design plates intended for practical use by artisans and architects. Four prints in collections originate from his illustrated volume, Auβzierungen zu Thüren u. Fenster sehr nutzlich zu gebrauchen. These works detail specific ornamental applications, including plates titled Suggestions for the Decoration of Frames and Suggestions for the Decoration of a Door and Window Frame. Beyond technical design, Müller’s corpus includes figural studies, such as the print The Holy Family with the infant Saint John the Baptist, after Barocci, confirming his practice of translating compositions by established painters into engravings.

The practice of Johann Sebastian Müller is represented in major institutional holdings, with six of his known prints and designs preserved in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Because his work dates to the mid-eighteenth century, much of his material is now available in the public domain. Today, collectors and researchers can access high-quality prints of these designs, which provide valuable insight into European decorative arts of the period.
