Johann Nepomuk Strixner
Johann Nepomuk Strixner was an artist and printmaker active between 1806 and 1825. His surviving body of work indicates a focus on graphic arts, with five prints and one drawing attributed to him held in major collections internationally.
Strixner’s subjects were varied, encompassing genre scenes, landscape, and formal portraiture. Examples of his work include the descriptive genre study Peasant Sitting at a Table, Smoking a Pipe and the military scene Krijgsman aan tafel. He also executed detailed landscape studies, such as Woodland Scenery with Lake, alongside official commissions like the Portret van Willem I, koning van Württemberg.
Today, Johann Nepomuk Strixner prints and drawings are preserved in collections that establish his historical relevance, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Cleveland Museum of Art, and the Rijksmuseum. The works represented in these institutions are often reproduced as high-quality prints, providing access to his technical skill in engraving and drawing.
