Portrait of Joannes Pieter Visser Bender

Joannes Pieter Visser Bender

Joannes Pieter Visser Bender was an artist and graphic worker whose documented activity spanned the years 1795 to 1813. Working across the transition from the late 18th century into the early Romantic period, Bender primarily specialized in prints and drawings, establishing his presence as a figure in graphic arts.

His surviving works encompass a variety of subjects, including portraiture, equestrian studies, and allegorical or genre scenes. Six works are currently represented in museum collections, including five prints and one drawing. These include the portrait Portret van Izaak Jansz. de Wit, the equestrian study Gezadeld paard, and figurative studies such as Man met steek op het hoofd and Reiziger op een bospad. A notable allegorical work is the print Vrouwen met symbolen van de dierenriem.

The primary institutional holding for Bender's material is the Rijksmuseum, which preserves these historical records. The availability of these pieces ensures that the artist’s contribution to early 19th-century graphic production remains accessible. Today, many of these Joannes Pieter Visser Bender prints are available in the public domain, offering researchers high-quality prints for non-commercial use and providing a museum-quality reference of the artist’s style.
