Portrait of Jean Jacques Lagrenée

Jean Jacques Lagrenée

Jean Jacques Lagrenée was an artist documented as active during the mid-eighteenth century, with his known period of activity spanning 1750 to 1762. The majority of his preserved output consists of graphic arts, with twelve prints and three drawings currently represented across museum collections.

The documented works showcase the artist’s engagement with both devotional and secular subjects. Notable religious compositions include Rest on the Flight into Egypt and the devotional work, The Virgin at left watching the infant Christ as he sleeps, an oval composition, after Reni. His versatility is evident in the detailed Still Life: Vases, a Cassolette on a Pedestal, and an Overturned Basket of Fruit, alongside works focusing on conceptual design, such as Design for a Military Trophy.

A selection of his artistic output is summarized in the portfolio Four Religious and Secular Compositions. Today, works attributed to Lagrenée, including several Jean Jacques Lagrenée prints, are held in prestigious American collections, notably the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the National Gallery of Art. Many of these historical images fall into the public domain and are available as high-quality prints for scholarly examination and appreciation, often distributed as royalty-free downloadable artwork.
