Portrait of Jean Jacques de Boissieu

Jean Jacques de Boissieu

Jean Jacques de Boissieu was an artist active during the first half of the eighteenth century, with his documented professional career spanning the years 1700 to 1756. His surviving works primarily consist of graphic media, focusing on landscape and genre subjects that document both European topographical views and rustic, everyday life.

His artistic legacy is secured by representation in major international institutions. Currently, thirteen drawings and two Jean Jacques de Boissieu prints are documented in museum collections, including the Rijksmuseum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Art Institute of Chicago.

Boissieu’s known compositions reveal an interest in detailed architectural renderings and scenic views. Specific documented works include the major landscape View of an Italian Villa and Gardens (the Belvedere of the Vatican) and the topographical study Vue du chateau de Madrid. Other works, such as A Country Road across an Ancient Bridge and the genre scene A Farmyard, showcase his skill in rendering pastoral settings. Given the period of his activity, many of the artist’s graphic works now reside in the public domain, allowing for the creation of high-quality prints and downloadable artwork.
