Portrait of Jean François Janinet

Jean François Janinet

Jean François Janinet was an artist active during a ten-year span from 1762 to 1772. Based on current records of museum holdings, Janinet was primarily a printmaker, with fifteen of their prints represented in prestigious international collections.

Janinet’s body of work demonstrates proficiency across classical, mythological, and portraiture subjects. Subject matter documented includes the repeated study of classical structures, as seen in two recorded versions of Antieke ruïnes. Other documented compositions address mythological figures and allegory, specifically represented by Herderinnen en saters and La Folie. Janinet also engaged in intimate studies, such as the portrait fragment Hoofd en oor van een kind.

The preservation of Jean François Janinet prints in major institutions affirms the quality and historical relevance of their output. Examples of this museum-quality work are held in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Cleveland Museum of Art, and the Rijksmuseum. Today, much of this work is available as downloadable artwork through public collections.
