Jean Damascene Sallusti

Jean Damascene Sallusti was an artist and engraver active during a focused period from 1758 to 1766. Documentation of Sallusti's artistic output centers on his contributions to monumental commissioned print projects, often depicting contemporary military and historical events.

Sallusti is primarily recognized for his involvement in the major series, Battle Scenes of the Quelling of the Rebellions in the Western Regions, with imperial Poems. This extensive suite of prints served as an official visual record of the Qianlong Emperor’s mid-eighteenth-century military campaigns. Eight high-quality prints attributed to Sallusti are represented in museum collections, confirming his role in the production of this detailed series.

Specific works in the series include Chieftain Wushe Surrendering the City, Great Victory at Hu'erman, Khan of Bada Shan Presenting Tribute, Rewards to Generals and Officers in Quelling the Uigurs, and Battle of Kulongkui. These detailed engravings are preserved in institutions such as the Cleveland Museum of Art. Historical prints from this era, including comparable examples of downloadable artwork by Sallusti’s contemporaries, are often found today in the public domain, allowing wide accessibility to these important records.
