Portrait of Jean Achille Benouville

Jean Achille Benouville

Jean Achille Benouville was active as an artist between 1815 and 1857. The surviving documentation of his work indicates a focus on landscapes and topographical views, particularly centered around Italian and coastal subjects.

The record of Benouville’s output represented in major American institutions consists of eight documented works, including six drawings and two Jean Achille Benouville paintings. Notable works preserved in museum collections include the highly detailed view SS. Giovanni e Paolo, seen from the Villa Mattei, Rome, the dramatic Sunset from a Rocky Coastline, and the landscape studies A Rocky Meadow by a River and Edge of a Wood. Further scenic subjects include Capri.

The credibility of his oeuvre is established by its inclusion in significant public collections, such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the National Gallery of Art, and the Cleveland Museum of Art. Many of the artist's works held in these institutions are now in the public domain, allowing for the reproduction of high-quality prints and downloadable artwork for study and appreciation.
