Jan van der Mey
Jan van der Mey was an artist or documentarian active around 1902. While detailed biographical dates are unavailable, Van der Mey’s output included at least 15 documented publications (books) and several photographic or documented scenes preserved in institutional collections.
The five works represented in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, reflect a focus on both domestic life and international travel documentation common to the early twentieth century. Subjects include family portraits and local Dutch settings, such as Familie Van der Mey voor een woning en op straat in Tiel and Gezicht op Tiel met molen en de familie Van der Mey in een koets.
Van der Mey’s scope extended far beyond the Netherlands, documenting distant locales and major landmarks. Notable travel works include views of North America, specifically Gezicht op Brock's monument en een varende stoomboot bij de Niagarawatervallen and Gezicht op Hanlan's eiland, Toronto, en een aangemeerde stoomboot.
The inclusion of these descriptive works in the Rijksmuseum demonstrates their museum-quality preservation. Due to the era of their creation, many Jan van der Mey prints and documented scenes are now classified within the public domain, making high-quality prints and downloadable artwork widely accessible for study and reproduction.
