Jan Kobell

Jan Kobell (1788-1820) was a pivotal Dutch painter and printmaker who operated at the intersection of late eighteenth-century classicism and the rising tide of Romantic landscape painting. Renowned specifically as an animalier, Kobell dedicated his brief but intensive career to mastering the study of livestock, elevating the genre of pastoral life through rigorous draftsmanship and subtle atmospheric effects.

Unlike earlier Golden Age masters who often used animals as mere accessories to grand narratives, Kobell treated the cow or ox as the central protagonist, utilizing their mass and stillness to anchor his compositions.
