Jan Brandes
Jan Brandes was an artist active in the 1770s, with his documented artistic production spanning the years 1770 to 1778. Brandes is known primarily for his graphic work, with fourteen drawings and one additional work represented in museum collections. The Rijksmuseum holds a significant portion of this output, establishing Brandes's place within the 18th-century tradition of graphic documentation and study. The subjects explored by Brandes range broadly, from calligraphic puzzles, such as Gekalligrafeerd raadsel, to studies of wildlife and narrative scenes, including Hollandse vogel, Hollandse koekoek, and Officier schrijft logboek. The preservation of these works confirms the historical value of Jan Brandes prints and drawings. Today, many of these images are available for study as downloadable artwork, having entered the public domain, allowing institutions to provide high-quality prints for researchers.
