James Hazard
James Hazard was an artist active during the latter half of the eighteenth century and the early years of the nineteenth century, working between approximately 1750 and 1807. Hazard focused primarily on portraiture and printmaking, though extant documentation also confirms his involvement in book production.
The artist’s work is represented in significant international collections, establishing his presence in eighteenth-century art documentation. Five documented works attributed to Hazard are currently represented in museum databases, including the Rijksmuseum. This collection includes four individual prints and one book.
Notable surviving works held in museum collections include the self-portraits Zelfportret met brede neus and Self-portrait with a broad nose, which demonstrate his approach to printed likenesses. Other documented pieces include figure studies such as Man in a square cap, in profile right and Portret van een man. The continued documentation of James Hazard prints ensures his work remains available for scholarly study. Due to the age of these works, many are considered public domain, allowing institutions to offer downloadable artwork and high-quality prints for broader public access.
