Portrait of Hermanus Petrus Schouten

Hermanus Petrus Schouten

Hermanus Petrus Schouten was an artist active in the Netherlands during the mid-eighteenth century, with his documented artistic production spanning the period between 1747 and 1757. Schouten specialized in detailed topographical studies and focused specifically on capturing the architecture and atmosphere of Amsterdam’s urban environment.

Six drawings attributed to Schouten are currently represented in international museum collections, establishing the historic relevance of his output. These institutions include the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. His works function as meticulous visual documentation of specific city views, recording landmarks such as the former Nieuwe Korenbeurs and the Hogesluis. Notable surviving titles include A View of the Nieuwe Korenbeurs on the Damrak, Amsterdam, the Tower of the Oude Kerk Beyond, View of the Old Church of Amsterdam, and Gezicht op de Nieuwe Stadsherberg in de Plantage.

These historically significant drawings, which also include Gezicht op de Haringpakkerij and Gezicht op de Hogesluis bij Amsteldijk, are prized for their accuracy. Today, high-quality prints derived from these originals allow for detailed study of the artist’s hand and the state of the city in the 1750s. As works held in major public institutions, images of these Hermanus Petrus Schouten prints are often available for non-commercial use, reflecting their status within the public domain and meeting museum-quality standards.
