Herman Coets

Herman Coets was an artist active during the late 17th century, with his documented career spanning the years 1673 to 1700. Known primarily for works on paper, his surviving output centers heavily on biblical history and New Testament subjects. Coets’s practice included detailed drawings, four of which are represented in major collections, alongside one other documented work.

The known corpus of Herman Coets’s art focuses on profound narrative episodes, particularly those related to Creation. His documented works include detailed renderings such as Schepping van licht en donker, Schepping van het uitspansel, and Schepping van hemel en aarde. He also addressed scenes from the Gospels, exemplified by the drawing De roeping van Simon Petrus en Andreas and the work titled De bergrede (?).

The artist's significance is established by his representation in key institutions; all five of the works cataloged are held in the collections of the Rijksmuseum. Due to the historical period of the artist’s activity, many existing Herman Coets prints and drawings are categorized as public domain materials. These historical works are increasingly digitized and made available as high-quality prints for scholarly research and appreciation.
