Hendrik Jacobsz Soeteboom

Hendrik Jacobsz Soeteboom was a printmaker known to be active in 1658. Little biographical information is recorded regarding the artist beyond his output of prints, which often centered on historical, geographical, and heraldic subjects during the mid-seventeenth century.

The work of Soeteboom is represented in major institutions, with five prints currently held in museum collections, notably the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. These surviving prints demonstrate an interest in documenting local history and topography. Among the documented works are the historical depiction Portret van de geuzenleider Diederik van Sonoy, the topographical rendering Slot op den Hoef te Egmond aan den Hoef, and the naval scene Vloot van Floris V van Holland (1288). Further examples of his detailed work include the heraldic studies Wapenschild van Jan van Beaumondt and Wapenschild van de familie Van Zaanden.

His output of historical graphics, preserved in the Rijksmuseum, solidifies his place as a documentarian of his era. Today, much of this historical graphic material is in the public domain, making high-quality prints and downloadable artwork accessible for research and study, and confirming the museum-quality nature of Soeteboom’s surviving work.
