Hans Reinhart
Hans Reinhart the Elder (1510-1581) was a preeminent German goldsmith and medalist whose intricate metalworks defined the aesthetic standards of the mid-sixteenth-century German Renaissance. Active primarily in Saxony, Reinhart’s output, though compact, comprising approximately ten documented metalworks, is highly valued for its technical precision and innovative handling of both theological narratives and dynastic portraiture.
Reinhart excelled in small-scale relief, translating the monumental themes traditionally reserved for painting and sculpture into complex, high-relief bronze and silver medals or plaquettes. His striking relief of John Frederick (1503-1554), Elector of Saxony, captures the complex, resilient identity of a pivotal Reformation leader. Similarly, his commemoration of Maximilian I, Holy Roman Emperor (1493–1519), demonstrates a mastery of the classically-inspired profile portraiture often reserved for imperial coinage.
His works are recognized as museum-quality examples of Northern Renaissance craftsmanship, with significant pieces held in major international collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
