Gustav Kalhammer

Gustav Kalhammer was an artist active for a brief but documented period in the early twentieth century, specifically from 1907 to 1912. Kalhammer specialized in graphic media, with the documented output consisting entirely of prints that showcase themes ranging from architectural illustration to decorative art.

The historical significance and artistic merit of Kalhammer’s work are established by its representation in major international institutions, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Fifteen of the artist’s prints are currently preserved in museum collections, demonstrating expertise across several genres.

Notable Gustav Kalhammer prints include the decorative studies Basket of Flowers and Butterflies (Schmatterlingen), alongside greeting card designs such as Happy Birthday (Herzlichen Glückwunsch zum Geburtstage). Kalhammer also produced detailed topographical and architectural renderings, including the prominent German views Berlin: Cathedral (Der Dom) and Berlin: Reichstag Building (Reichstagsgebäude).

Due to the period of the artist’s activity, many of these original designs are today entering the public domain, allowing for greater access and study. Institutions often provide high-quality prints of this historical material to researchers and the general public.
