Gong Xian (龔賢)
Gong Xian (龔賢) was a painter active from 1644 to 1688. His documented oeuvre consists primarily of detailed landscapes, aligning him with the classical traditions of Chinese Shanshui painting. This connection to earlier masters is exemplified by the title of the work Landscape in the Style of Dong Yuan and Juran.
Ten of Gong Xian’s works are represented in prominent North American institutions, comprising nine paintings and one drawing. These holdings establish the museum-quality standard for his output. Noteworthy documented pieces include Dwelling among mountains and clouds, Landscape, and the evocative scene Summer in the Water Country. His output is also represented by the drawing Landscapes and trees.
Major institutions holding Gong Xian (龔賢) paintings include the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Cleveland Museum of Art. The significant representation of his art across these collections ensures his continued study. Because of its age, much of his work has entered the public domain, making high-quality prints and reproductions available today for scholars and collectors.
